Cannabis & Sex - A match made in Heaven?

written by Kim Sands

We live in exciting times. The 2018 Farmer Bill helped change the trajectory of hemp legality in the United States forever, taking hemp off the list of Schedule I Substances. CBD, of course, is a product of hemp, so this legislation opened up a whole world of possibilities. The only stipulation: A finished hemp product (think CBD gummies) can’t legally contain more than 0.3% THC.

What’s the difference between CBD and THC?

HEMP-DERIVED CBD (Cannabidiol)

-Legal at the federal level.

-Contains THC, but legally no more than 0.3% THC.

-Does not produce a “head high,” the feeling generally associated with being stoned.

-Can be purchased easily online or in retail stores across the country.

VS

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)

-Illegal at the federal level.

-Produces a head high.

-Can be purchased only in state-licensed recreational or medical marijuana dispensaries.

-Present in marijuana at concentrations greater than 0.3%.

So, what does this all have to do with sex?

When cannabis is legalized at the federal level, we’ll talk about its potential benefits to your sex life. (That's a whole 'nother post...) For now, let’s focus on CBD. Here are three ways it can enhance your sexual experiences:

1. Sexual Anxiety Relief

An early 2020 study out of Brazil concluded that “CBD has a promising role as alternative therapy in the management of anxiety disorders,” suggesting relief of sexual performance anxiety.

The study found that men who took 300-600mg CBD experienced significantly less anxiety and fewer symptoms attributed to sexual anxiety.

2. Increased Drive

A study on cannabis intoxication and its effects on erotic stimuli conducted in 2017 and published in Psychopharmacology concluded that “Cannabis intoxication increases activation of the right nucleus accumbens to erotic stimuli,” suggesting that CBD use can stimulate and enhance sexual desire. If you’re experiencing low libido, try some legal CBD!

3. Enhanced Orgasms

Topical CBD is often used to help alleviate pain and inflammation, promote muscle relaxation, and relieve skin irritation, so it’s no surprise that it can [ahem] smooth the way to better sex. According to Healthline.com, a personal lubricant that includes CBD as an ingredient can help increase sensitivity, encourage relaxation, and, for many, allow a better connection with their partners. All of these factors can contribute to stronger orgasms.
